Progress is being made in bringing together children placed in foster homes and orphanages to visit their parents in prison. The Czech Helsinki Committee enabled over forty children in care to meet with their mothers and fathers in prison in 2015. Their aim is to support children in institutions to allow them to be in regular contact with their parents who are incarcerated.
This is a step in the right direction. According to Czech legislation and already existing policy documents, children’s visits to prison are organized the same way as adult visits, ignoring the specific need of the child. The Czech Helsinki Committee’s success shows the importance in changing those policies to better suit children.
