The Quaker United Nations Office Geneva (QUNO) will co-host a briefing on the new revised UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (known as the “Nelson Mandela Rules”), the key set of international standards on detention conditions and the treatment of prisoners. For information about the Nelson Mandela Rules, COPE recommends this short explainer video produced by Penal Reform International (PRI): https://vimeo.com/149636959

The event, co-hosted by PRI, the Permanent Mission of Switzerland and the Permanent Mission of Uruguay, will take place on Thursday 4 February from 15.00-17.00, in Room XXV at the Palais des Nations, Geneva.

An expert panel, moderated by Laurel Townhead, QUNO Representative for Human Rights and Refugees, will address issues around the process of revising the original rules and will discuss ideas for the implementation of the new updated rules.
