On March 20, 2024, Bambinisenzabarre signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding with the Court of Milan, marking a significant step towards enhancing support services for children with a parent in prison. This MoU aims to promote access to free support services for children facing the challenging period of a parent’s incarceration.
This pioneering protocol, the first of its kind in Italy, underscores the critical importance of addressing the needs of children impacted by a parent’s imprisonment. It represents a pivotal milestone in the implementation of the ‘Charter of Rights of Children of Detained Parents’, coinciding with its tenth anniversary (2014-2024). The Charter, which has been progressively adopted in Italian prisons and serves as a model for European counterparts, outlines guidelines for safeguarding the rights of children maintaining relationships with incarcerated parents, in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (20 November 1989).
Central to the protocol is the commitment of the Court of Milan to inform family members at the moment of issuing visit permits of the availability of support services provided by Bambinisenzabarre at no cost. Families will be guided on accessing specialised counselling and support courses, particularly surrounding the child’s initial visit to the imprisoned parent, ensuring continuity in the child-parent relationship.
