Implementation of Irish Prison Services

he Irish Prison Services has moved forward on a major policy decision. To have the Irish Prison Service place a larger emphasis in general, on parenting initiatives for prisoners that have as their aim, the long term well-being of children affected by the imprisonment of their parent. This focus on parenting is a great step towards providing care for children with an imprisoned parent.

In addition to the focus on parenting, children of prisoners are now explicitly mentioned in Ireland’s National Children’s Strategy. These policy developments are in large part thanks to the lobbying efforts of the Irish Penal Reform Trust.
